Home decor that makes your space feel like you

YOUR HAPPY PLACE

Personalizing your home decor plays a big role in how you feel about your space. Cookie cutter is fine, but boring. And why be boring when you could be you

Today we’re going to talk about how art can help transform your house into the place of your dreams and what to consider when choosing art and home decor.

MAKE IT ABOUT YOU

Before you start shopping for new art, get some ideas on paper. It’s good to have a vision, vibe or loose plan.

Here are some prompts to help you make your home decor about you:

— What vibe do I want for the house?

— Do I want each room to be drastically different or do I want them to flow together with a theme?

— What big interests do I want to be reflected on my wall?

— Do I have any collections I want to show off?

— What aesthetic do I want in the room where people gather together?

— Who are my favorite artists, inventors, creators, or writers?

Think about your own interests, favorite colors, hobbies, and make sure to include those in your considerations.

It is YOUR home after all. It’s about you.

PERSONALIZE HOME DECOR WITH CUSTOM ART

Nothing screams “you” louder than a commissioned piece of art. It reveals an artist’s style you love, a topic or person you love, and it really lights up your space with intention.

It can be anything you want so it’ll be unique and special to you.

Of course I offer custom art through A Cup of Cloudy. Mostly I make illustrations of people’s families or their family home. I love drawing people and I love drawing houses so I think it works out great for everyone. Check out the custom art I’ve done here.

Personalization is the key to stunning home decor. Think of all the luxury homes you see in movies: they’ve always got a super weird custom piece of art, or an ultra rare statue worth a bajillion dollars. Unique, personal, one of a kind.

Home decor doesn’t have to be bought from regular big box stores. It can be made just for you by an artist. It can be something you DIY – make your own custom art. Customization is the fun part of decorating any room.

FANCY AND FUNCTIONAL

It’s great when everything looks beautiful, but is it functional? Don’t let your custom artwork, trinket collections, houseplants, and throw pillows take up all the space. There has to be room for ~activities~ and people.

Consider your hobbies, work space, kids toy throwing area, and ensure there’s enough elbow room for everything you need to do at home.

I always have to have an art studio. Whether it’s a full room or one drawer of supplies stashed in the kitchen – it’s a priority and it WILL be existing somewhere.

What spaces are a priority for you? Make them functional and then decorate with wall art around the way the space functions.

USE PERSONAL TOKENS AS HOME DECOR

Growing up my mother was the queen of using personal tokens as decorations. In the hallway she framed and hung dozens of photographs of the family. During Christmastime she’d take all the cards we got in the mail and tape them to the door in the front room. It really made home feel like home.

What personal tokens do you have that you cherish? It could be a photo, a concert ticket, a stuffed animal you girlfriend got you, that one weird item from that one awesome memory that you keep holding onto.

Hang personal tokens up on the wall next to your cool wall art and your custom pieces! Display them on shelves and look at them every day. These things help remind you of who you are, where you’ve been, and people you love. They make home feel like home and it’ll be unmistakable that it’s ~you~ who lives there.

USE ART AS A CONVERSATION STARTER

Let’s talk about how your home decor will impact your visitors. Artwork quickly changes a room to reflect your personality and let anyone who visits you see what you’re all about.

Pick artwork that sparks a conversation. When a friend is invited into your home, they’ll learn a lot about you. Let your wall decorations initiate a topic that might have otherwise been uncovered. Quirky, bright, hyper-specific artwork does this best.

Give everyone something to talk about!

This tip was given in a home decor article on Redfin about how to spruce up your tiny apartment if you liked these tips and want more of them — especially for a smaller space.

HOME SWEET HOME

The key is that there are no rules. Paint a mural in your hallway. Hang up family photos where everyone looks great except your mean uncle Henry. Hang up weird artwork. It’s your home.

Make it feel like you 🙂
